"Acting!" That was the cry you heard at your first theatre class as you entered the room. The teacher, probably also the English teacher and some-time stand-in Music teacher, was letting everyone know what they were all here for. This introduction to acting may have been the beginning or the end of your foray in to the realm of the performing arts. Maybe they yelled a little too loudly, seemed a little off as they bellowed into the rafters, so you quietly exited, crossing acting off of your list of potential elective classes.
If this was not the case and you took right to it, and you haven't come to be reading this article about acting because of some fluke of fate caused by having been assigned or having chosen acting as a topic for a research paper, congratulations for following your dreams and not giving up on something that can be a very challenging and sometimes thankless profession. Acting is not for the meek. That is what your drama teacher was yelling about.
Acting for many people is the only thing that keeps them from actually going completely insane. By playing another person completely, they are able to flush out powerful demons and mental afflictions through the acting process. Yes, in the end, Acting is in fact, great therapy, and we should all be thankful for it.
