You may know acting agencies by other names like talent agency, casting company, casting agency, etc. However, do not be confused, because they all are essentially the same thing. We say this while simultaneously acknowledging that here are some companies calling themselves acting agencies which do have more to do with teaching acting and providing networking and outreach opportunities for would-be actors.
Most acting agencies are involved with assisting actresses and actors with locating work and auditions, and agents or productions with locating worthy talent. This may be all they do, but some in recent years have gotten hip (although some acting agencies had been doing it all along) to the fact that they can get involved in producing projects on their own and use the talent on their rosters to perform. Acting agencies are not limited in the scope of what they may do with their company.
Acting agencies are in the business of making life easier for both the people making the film, TV show, or Broadway play, and the actors and performers they have on their rosters. They are a resource for the studios and producers, and, ideally, a "friend in the business" for aspiring actors that need that all-essential audition or casting call to get them a chance to show their stuff.
